Tourist attractions in Nelson
The sun-kissed city of Nelson represents the heart of a region brimming with natural and cultural attractions.
The city's many charms include historic buildings; a thriving cafe culture; gourmet food, top wine and boutique beer; museums and art galleries; and lively markets.
Further afield you can explore the limestone and marble caves in Kahurangi National Park, and walk or kayak the coastline of the spectacular Abel Tasman National Park with its deserted golden beaches. Visit the district's many artists and craftspeople at work in their pottery, glass blowing, and woodcarving studios in the towns that dot Golden Bay. And the long crescent of sand, dunes and wetlands that makes up the renowned bird sanctuary of Farewell Spit can be explored by foot or four-wheel drive. Meanwhile, the strikingly beautiful and mountainous Nelson Lakes National Park offers water sports and cross-country skiing in the winter.
