Work and play in the Bay of Plenty
British explorer Captain Cook noticed abundant food supplies in this region in the 18th century, and called it the Bay of Plenty - a fact that remains true today.
New Zealand is responsible for some 35% of the world's 'kiwi' or kiwifruit trade. It's the nation's largest horticulture export, and the main crop of this region. Other important crops are avocado and citrus, all supplying work for 11 months a year on the orchards or inside the pack-houses.

Boasting some of New Zealand's most stunning beaches, including world-class surf breaks at Ohope and popular Mt Maunganui, the region is paradise for rest and recreation. Get great seafood in the restaurants and bars of Tauranga city, or try for your own with local big game fishing.
There's also trout fishing, skydiving, white water rafting, jet boating, swimming with dolphins or visiting White Island, New Zealand's only active marine volcano.
Inland, the geothermal city of Rotorua has been wowing tourists since the 19th century with magnificent mud-pools and geysers. It also offers many opportunities to experience the extraordinary culture of New Zealand's indigenous Maori people.
