Scholarships
Every year Horticulture New Zealand offers scholarships to New Zealand students and trainees who have a special interest in the fruit or vegetable industry and are undergoing significant industry training or education.
Horticulture New Zealand Scholarships 2010
There are two types of scholarships available:
$500 Horticulture New Zealand Industry Training Scholarship
This scholarship is available to industry trainees. It provides financial assistance and acknowledges the achievements of those who currently work and study in the fruit and vegetable industry.
$4,500 Horticulture New Zealand Undergraduate Scholarship
This scholarship is available to undergraduate students. It consists of $3,000 plus attendance at the Horticulture New Zealand conference, with registration fees, travel and accommodation included. The conference provides students with an excellent opportunity to learn from delegates and speakers, as well as the chance to meet and mix with key industry figures.
Each scholarship is for one year only.
To win a scholarship you must:
- be a New Zealand citizen or resident
- show signs of commitment to the fruit and vegetable industry
- have the potential and willingness to contribute to the future of the fruit and vegetable industry
- display achievement and responsibilities to date (this includes how you have performed during your studies, what your academic achievements have been and/or your contribution to the workplace)
- have relevant skills, such as technical, management, communication and/or relationship skills
- show an individual approach and personal qualities
- have references from your employers, mentors and/or industry figures
- agree to contribute to the promotion of the New Zealand horticulture industry.
Students and trainees must be registered in their course as of 31 March 2010.

Clark Fletcher Memorial Citrus Bursary, New Zealand Citrus Growers Inc
The Clark Fletcher Memorial Citrus Bursary is an award of up to $5,000 per annum that is granted to either a tertiary student who has a specific interest in the citrus industry, or an applicant who is involved in research that is likely to contribute to the New Zealand citrus industry.
The Executive Committee of New Zealand Citrus Growers Incorporated (NZCGI) reviews applications, with a strong preference given to projects that are aligned with NZCGI's research goals. The scholarship is an education bursary available to any student studying at a New Zealand tertiary institution for a diploma, degree, or post-graduate qualification in applied science and who has a specific interest in the citrus industry.
The scholarship may also be used to assist any suitable applicant involved in a research project that is likely to make a contribution to the New Zealand citrus industry.
To win this scholarship you must:
- be involved in a research project that is likely to make a contribution to the New Zealand citrus industry, or have a specific interest in the citrus industry.

Summerfruit NZ Undergraduate Scholarship, Massey University
The Summerfruit NZ Undergraduate Scholarship is for Massey University students who display excellence in their academic achievements. The scholarship is designed to help students complete a degree relevant to the sustainable development of the New Zealand horticulture industry. It is worth $3,500 per annum.
To win this scholarship you must:
- be enrolled for a full-time three-year Massey University course of study that will prepare you for a career in horticultural production or research
- display academic merit
- show evidence of current and/or planned activity to support the development of the New Zealand horticultural industry, with particular emphasis on the summerfruit industry.
